881 review September 4, 2007

Just watched 881 movie at Tiong Bahru plaza. I think the movie is really quite good. It depicts the 2 getai sisters’ life in a very “Hokkien song” fashion. Throughout the movie, the depiction of their emotions are always accompanied by very sad hokkien songs. There is a part when Weilian is singing a very sad song at Si Ma Lu, his singing is really very touching. And i typically like the way the director deal with the sad scenes. There is one scene when “big papaya” returns home, but her mother doesn’t want to acknowledge her. The scene is supposed to be very sad, and then, the “big papaya” started to sing a hokkien song. I was like ….”er…..”, it’s really quite amusing when the hokkien song is played accompanied by the sad scene. It makes me wonder whether should i cry or should i laugh out loud.
The last scene is also one of the best, showing the 2 sisters hugging together when “small papaya” is dying. I think they are like seated on a revolving disc or something, with “small papaya” in her last few minutes. Then after she died, “big papaya” sang alone in the next “7th month getai”, and the next scene shows ”small papaya” appeared singing with her. I think that is the most heart-felt scene in the movie.
The show is not really all about sad stories. There are also many situations when the director uses very exaggerating moves. Such as the powers of the “Getai Xian Gu”, which is totally out of the way. She is a human, but she lives in a temple like a goddess, with magical powers. And the “Durian Sisters” can take out crossbows to aim and fire at the Papaya sisters. In the last “battle”, they really have very exotic costumes and props, even a bulldozer comes into the way. Not to mention that the papaya sisters can switch costumes split second in just 1 song.
I don’t usually prefer local movies, and this is in fact the first local movie i had ever wanted to watch in a cinema. For that, i will give it 5 stars. Well done!
Fireworks Festival August 21, 2007

I was at the gym @ One George Street last friday. After a 30 mins run on the theadmill and a one hour body-jam session, i decided to go for long-awaited swim at the pool.

Oh, how i love the pool, the scenary is so good. You can get a very good view of raffles place from inside the pool, how cool! But that day, i was quite annoyed with the increasing number of people at the side of the pool. Some idiots even seat at the bench where i put my towel. Totally no manners, what ugly Singaporeans.
I got curious and ask the staff, and so the person at the counter told me the people are there to see the fireworks. Oh yah, i remembered, and i was going to meet YC they all the next day for fireworks festival. Anyway, since i was there, i waited for a a while to watch the fireworks.

Wahaha…… the view is block halfway by another building. Too bad!
Nevertheless, i got to see the fireworks again the next day on Sat.

The crowd is so huge we can barely walk. I began to wonder, why am i there squeezing with the millions of other people just to watch a 15 min show…..

It’s being so long since i last blogged. So sorry. I’m too busy these few weeks and too lazy also. Firstly, my work at my internship company is piling up, now got 3 projects on hand and still need to do some ad-hoc debugging, etc. And i’m going to gym every mon and wed, fri either go out with frens or go gym. So very busy….
Anyway, back to the topic: Camp Woohoo! It’s the Hall 2 FOCamp for this 2007. My first time “joining” the camp, even though i had been in Hall 2 for 2 years already. This is my 3rd, and i’m hoping to stay on till my 4th year. Cos i didnt get in to hall in the first round for the previous 2 years. Well….

Tat’s only Day 2, cos the other days i didnt take any photos. And i only attend the night sessions on weekdays cos of my IA. BUT i make it full time for the weekends hor, completing the “Initiation” in the last night also.
Oh, and I discontinued with my ex-roomie also. Cos he lost his keys and i request to change the lock. But the hall office wants to charge us $150!!! Siao! 1 lock only where got so ex? Not to mention that the block 9 TV room TV is still not working for more than 1 whole semester!!! What’s this! Then the hall officer want to accuse me of late return of keys which my ex-roomie drew for me, which i already told him to cancel it. I even gave the hall officer the prove of my emails to him, black and white. Then he say it’s a difficult situation to determine and it’s probably a communication breakdown. Ha! Nevermind!
And so, i stayed on to my temp room, and got a new roomie. Good, got TV now! Though i seldom watch ![]()

Lazy Days August 29, 2006

I’m lazy these days. I just want to relax.
I went to pet villa again yesterday. I love the place, it’s so peaceful and relaxing, keeping me free of all the terrible thoughts of the project deadlines altogether. I just like to sit there with all the doggies around me, enjoying how wonderful life is.
I bought a small packet of beef and cheese chewy to give the dogs a treat that day. A really small packet, smaller than pocky, but longer though. Definitely not enough for all the dogs. But i quite broke already, couldn’t buy too big packets. Anyway, this is the first time i bought something which Happy likes. Haha, good, now i know she likes softer things. Not only she, the other dogs also love it a lot. Got quite a few black dogs(which i stilll can’t name all except sweet girl) kept pouncing on me to get the treats, and also carrot, bobby, etc. Bobby almost bit my hands when he was too eager jumping up to grab the treats. Haha, the dogs there are getting fat, spoiled by us. Then later, Mohan also brought out 2 big packs of treats, not forgeting the other volunteer just fed them hot dogs, and they just got their lunch like 2 hours ago.
I know 3 more dogs that day - Max, Rocky and Betty. Betty got a serious injury, lucky the vet is around to treat her. She got a finger deep wound near her hind, and infection on the tail as well. Hmm….. is it a fight or is it an accident? Max is an old, white and grey dog. He’s a friendly chap. Rocky is one tall dog, a nice breed also. He’s white with some patches of brown at the ends and brown spots on his body. He got a nice atheletic figure and he’s very active. But i am warned, he do bites and he only listen to his owner.
I got to know some of the volunteers there that day. We even went out for dinner, and from next week onwards, i’m going to help up more, prepare the food, wash the containers, clear the shit, etc etc. I’m looking forward to it!
Pet Villa again on 6th August August 6, 2006

Yeah! I went to pet villa again on Sunday!
Haha, got to see Happy again! Hey hey, i took her out for a walk (and a little jog) :p. Cos i’m using the choker method with the leash, and it do seems a bit too tight for her when she is going faster than i. So if we jog, i’m a bit faster than her, so the leash won’t be too strenuous on her neck. And i trained her to walk beside me! Haha, but with the leash on of course. And she happily walks beside me without me putting much strain on her leash! Good doggie!

However, i find her a bit more aggresive these days. She showed her teeth quite a few times when i went on sunday, and almost got into fights, but luckily i managed to stop her. And she seems to be aggressive to other dogs when they come towards me when she is beside me. Hmmm…. i don’t know if that’s good or bad. HEY! But not when Carrot comes to lick me! Err…. carrot is getting more naughty le. He kept jumping on me, playing bite with me, and worse still, even when i’m standing, he pounds on me, wanting to lick my face, but as he couldn’t reach, he looks more like playing bite with me, rather than licking…… uh no….. Tried to teach him a few times, NO! But he don’t quite understand, so i ignored him everytime he tries that.

And Daisy is more peaceful. She seems very excited last time when i came, behaving like carrot. But now no more, so good! I like it.

Ah Lian and Ah Hua has grown bigger, but they are still puppies. They like to bite a lot, and is consistently trying to bite the clothes and shoes of a volunteer. Looks like they need to be taught not to do so. Ironically, it’s Carrot who is doing the job! Once when ah lian is trying to bite the volunteer’s clothes again, carrot came in to stop her. He surrounded ah lian by lying his weight on her, and pushes his face near her. Ah lian seems very scared being overwhelmed by carrot. Then carrot use his teeth and pulled the cheeks of ah lian, don’t worry, he didn’t bite her, just teaching. Amusingly, it’s the dog who loves to pounce on people, licking people all over the face, playing bite with people, who is the one to discipline the puppies.
Then i went to the cats’ side a while. They are all lazying around, sleeping, so i didn’t spend much time there. Just take a few photos again :p

So i went back to the dog’s side, more interactive. I got to know some names for some other dogs too.

This is Dinner. You should have guessed how he got his name. He was saved from a construction site, almost became the dinner of the workers there! He’s big, but very gentle. He just likes to coze around people, sitting there. One would feel very comfortable and peaceful, and secured (considering his large size) with him sitting beside. He likes to initiate shaking hand with people when he’s on the stone table.

But not as much as bobby! Hmmm…. He looks like a cross from the famous german shepherd, looking at the colour and pattern of its coat. He loves to shake hands and cuddle with people.

This is sweet girl, she’s a really nice dog. Wonder how she got her name…hmmm

I forgot to ask for his name, but he’s a very interesting dog, and piggy too.

Same as for him. He looks better now (emotionally). He usually shys away when i try to go near him, but today, after i go comb his hair (with my hands, so not really comb), sai yang him, he seems quite happy. He came back to me a few times too! And his tail went up! Good boy, hope he will get better physically too.

And this is a giant poodle in a very bad state! He seems very very very sad…… Poor dog, hope he gets well and in shape soon.
post note: it’s actually a golden retriever, and his name is ben-ben. He’s usually at the field so i dont see him often last time. His quite old already and have some problems with his liver.
When i walked out of the place, along farmway 2, i saw another 2 dogs, happily feasting on the food contributed by people for “bai bai”, haha!

Backed to Pet Villa!!! July 31, 2006

Today i went to pet villa on my own. Thanks Cathy for letting me in, hee!
Looking at Happy makes me happy!

She’s such a happy, loveable dog, haha, vert strong though, and quite naughty!!!! I wanted to take her out for a walk, but cathy told me happy ran away yesterday!! She slipped away from her collar and leash while she’s out for a walk. Cathy had to drive a long way to look for her. Bad Girl! No outing today.
As usual, Carrot is drowning me all over with her saliva. And now after i bathed, my towel is full of his smell! Hahaha

I tried to take her full photo, but whenever he saw me looking at he, he’ll run forward to lick me, so i can’t get any good shots him. OOps! i forgot is “he” or “her” le, i think is he ba….:p
Then there is this beautiful daisy.

I once thought she’s a border collie, hmmm…., but i don’t think so. Her ears do looked like one…..

I really like her, very pretty, and a bit hyper active, and naughty too.
Then there is Cheeky! (hey hey, happy wants a part in the photo too!)

Cheeky’s a small dog, but mind you, he’s fierce and he’ll bite if you come too close to Cathy. He’s just jealous when anyone comes too close to Cathy, and his fangs are long! A volunteer told me every volunteer there has been bitten by him before!
Our 3-legged friend is cozying around!

And this is yellow, it seems to be owned by one of the volunteers.

Very pretty dog, aint it? I like her tail, so feathery.
Caught sight of one peeping tom! haha

He’s got a nice figure, hehe.
Mohan was preparing the food for the wild dogs at Mandai, so i offered to help.

That’s rice, mixed with chicken, and small pebbles of dog food. I helped to mixed them with my bare hands! Haha, a bit yucky though. I cleaned my hands thoroughly before doing it, so that any dog eating it won’t die of food poisoning, haha. I just combed the dogs with my hands, so there might be fleas or germs, etc mah…. Hehe, also cleaned the pail containing the pebbles, hopefully next time i come can do more! hehe. And wish Happy is good enough so i can take her out!
The end!
Feeder Fish July 29, 2006
Posted by takeuaway in aquarium, beautiful life, fish tank.3 comments
I went to the aquarium shop at the nearby market place today, with the only intention to “see see look look”. Then i saw the shop owner in the process of feeding his fishes. To be specific, he’s feeding the arrowana in his tank, which it also shares with a siamese tiger fish and 2 birchirs.
He handpicked the worms, and dropped them one by one until the arrowana stops eating. So that left with one live worm struggling inside the fishtank. Poor thing…. nobody wants to eat it, not the arrowana, nor the tiger fish.
Then it’s the siamese tiger fish turn to have his meal. The shop owner again, handpicked some feeder fish, platy fish, to be specific. And he dropped it into the tank, the tiger fish, lived up to its name, with a “swoop”, dashes over to the pathetic, struggling platy trying to keep up with the current in the tank. The tiger fish ate it all, complete with the bones, nothing left to spill out.
I was feeling quite a bit sorry for the platy, the only purpose for it’s living is to feed the big fishes. Usually, these feeder fish are not given proper attention to their health or well-being. They are normally overpacked in styrofoam boxes with the water minimally filled to prevent them from jumping out. They are usually disease-bonded, and will not survive long. Some are worse, they are again, overly-packed, in small plastic bags, with really not much space to move around. Of course, they are not the worse, at least their plastic bags are bigger than the fighting fish.
The fighting fish, those not very good grade ones, are packed, individually in small, square plastic bags of around 10cm by 6cm! They can move a bit, but i don’t think they can turn around.
So out of pity, i bought 7 platy fishes, with 1 dollar. Actually i can get 15, but i don’t think my current tank can fill in that load.

Some even got white spots! But i trust myself that my current fishes are all very healthy, won’t be infected so easily, and i got antidote for it too. So these 7 little lucky feeder fish are now residing in my beautiful tank! HAHA
TAG performing at Esplanade July 28, 2006

TAG stands for Temasek Acapella Group, came from temasek secondary school. Saw their performance when i was at the esplanade yesterday.

Young they may be, but they do have very good talents in acapella. Only secondary school, and they are already perfoming at the esplanade, which really requires a very high standard.
Their first few songs seems quite like traditional acapella performance, a bit stiff, singing the old so classic evergreen hits. But it’s quickly followed by some “tongue stunts”. They really have a way with their tongues, making discotheque genre kind of music, only with their mouth. Wonder did their tongues ever get entangled? haha
